Registration of new voters, only 25.3 percent registered

The Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced the results of a recent voter registration exercise that ended on Friday last week.

In a statement to the media on Tuesday, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said 1,519 new voters, 294 were registered by November 5.
The IEBC was aiming to register at least six million new voters in the one-month period in which the registration process took place. However, only 25.3 percent of the commission’s target could be achieved.
The commission will compare the biometric data of new voters with 19, 668, 968 voters who were already on the voter register to ensure no names are repeated. Data for deceased voters will also be deleted.
The commission also announced that 421, 057 voters changed their polling stations during the period.
Registration of voters living outside Kenya’s borders will take off on December 6 and continue for 15 days until December 20.
